BRUNEI DARUSSALAM and other members of the East Asian Growth Area will be turning their focus to the inaugural BIMP-EAGA Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Conference in Davao City, the Philippines on October 23, 2007 as a platform for prospective avenues of greater collaboration in ICT.
The first BIMP-EAGA, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines East Asean Growth Area, ICT Conference, which is being held in conjunction with the sixth Mindanao Information Communications Technology Congress, will carry the theme of "ICT Beyond Border: People, Infrastructure, Innovation" with the aim of providing a venue in identifying areas for greater collaboration among Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Previous MICT congresses held have pushed Mindanao as a local part of the Philippines Cyberservices Corridor for contact services, medical transcription and business process outsourcing and provide a venue in identifying areas for greater collaboration among ICT stakeholders from both the private and public sectors of Mindanao, including the BIMP-EAGA.
A report on The Sun Star's website quoted Lizabel Holganza, congress director of the sixth MICT and first BIMP-EAGA ICT Congress as saying that resolutions presented during the congress will include the formation of the ICT Plan for the City, and also the formation of a common BIMP-EAGA ICT network.
"Speaking as a private player on behalf of the ICT Davao, we support the amendment of the City Incentive Code, we proposed to include specifically the ICT sector, we also support the executive order on the formation of the Davao ICT Plan, and the formation of a common Bimp-Eaga ICT network where the exchange of ideas and opportunities in the ICT can happen," Holganza said.
Holganza stressed that the sixth MICT is a good platform for the ICT councils of BIMP-EAGA from both the private and public sectors to converge with a view to discussing how they can contribute to the direction of attaining a common network for the ICT sector.
"Actually, there was a meeting in Manado, Indonesia, recently.
The BIMP countries converged and talked about the ICT concerns, the result of the meeting will be presented at the ICT Congress," Holganza said.
Despite the ICT Plan for Davao City not being ready, the Congress Director did however say that the technical working group formed for the conceptualisation of the plan has already convened and identified where it could benchmark the city in terms of ICT.
"This is the difference of the sixth MICT Congress from the past congresses. Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia will be joining us for the first time," she said.
Recently Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia successfully introduced a Frequent Traveller's Card (FTC) facility which allows citizens of both countries to cross into their borders without compromising national security.
The FTC initiative has been cited as a role model for other countries in Asean to follow in future.
