10th World Hainanese meet in Brunei

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

MORE than 1,000 Hainanese representatives from all over the world will congregate in the sultanate next month to attend the 10th Congress of the World Federation of Hainanese Associations.

The congress is jointly organised by the Bandar Seri Begawan and Kuala Belait's Hainan Associations, and will be the largest non-governmental meeting ever to be held in Brunei Darussalam. The whole-day event will take place October 15 at the International Convention Centre.

Themed "Impart Community Knowledge, Strengthen Collaborative Platform", the congress is aimed at promoting unity among the world's Hainanese associations and to raise their socio-economic standing by improving the exchange of human resources in various fields. It is also hoped to promote Brunei as an investment destination.

"Our expectations are not high, but the congress is an avenue that will expose people from all over the world to Brunei as a destination for business investments," said Dr Yong Chee Tuan, one of the congress' organising committee secretariat members.

"Not all of them may invest, but two per cent is a considerable number which can make a difference," he told The Brunei Times yesterday.

The Congress of the World Federation of Hainanese Associations was established to promote friendly ties among Hainanese globally.
