SHEIKH Raid Salah, the leader of the Islamic Movement in 1948 Palestinian, expressed in a special message to the Bruneians his wish to visit the abode of peace to explain the critical situation facing Masjidil Aqsa and Al Quds (the Israeli occupied city of Jerusalem) due to the aggressive Israeli campaign of destruction and desecration.
"I wish to explain and help the leaders and the people of Brunei Darussalam understand completely about how critical the situation is today in Masjidil Aqsa and in Al Quds," he told The Brunei Times. "I wish that with this understanding, Bruneians will be committed to helping liberate Masjidil Aqsa and Al Quds."
Raid Salah, recently released from a two-and-half-year imprisonment by Israel, was speaking on the sidelines of the last day of the three-day Al Quds International Forum here yesterday.
The event, full of activities toward assisting the liberation of Al Quds, ended last night with thousands of participants calling on the world to protect Al Quds and to end the Zionist Israel occupation.
The event featured discussions not only on how Zionism desecrates Masjidil Aqsa and victimises Palestinians but as well as possible solutions.
At the closing session last night, participants launched the Istanbul Declaration confirming the historical rights of the Palestinians in Al Quds and Palestine. It stresses that Al Quds, with its holy sites, is a heritage of religious, cultural and historical nature making the issue of defending its preservation a collective mission of humanity.
Drafted by eight scholars and religious leaders from different countries, the declaration demands the immediate stop in the building of Jewish settlements which are in effect the eradication of the Arab, Islamic and Christian identities, the displacement of people, and the changing of the borders and demography of Al Quds.
Ekrima Sabri, a khatib at Masjidil Aqsa and chairman of the highest Muslim committee in Palestine, told The Brunei Times that for the past five years the issue of Al Quds has been neglected by the Arab and the Muslim world. "We are seeking to revive the world's interest in the issue," he said.
"This conference is different from others that have been held previously because it is being attended by NGOs from around the world," Sabri said. "If each and every participant returns home and carries out campaigns to persuade their government take such a stance, (we have reasons to be optimistic)."
Sabri called for continued support from among the Muslims through donations to foundations working in the occupied land of Palestine. The forum planned a series of follow up actions including further networking among organisations that support Al Quds' liberation.
The speakers also agreed the "West" is morally responsible to correct the unjust role it played in the creation of the aggressor state of Israel and in covering up its destructive actions in Al Quds. "By the 'West' we mean governments and the regimes blindly supporting Israel," said Bishara Merhij, the vice-President of Al Quds International Foundation.
