A UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam (UBD) student of Health Science emerged first at the Asean Youth Extemporaneous Speaking Competition held at Radio Television Brunei (RTB) yesterday.

The theme "Do Drugs Control Your Life? Your Life, Your Community — No Place for Drugs" is the official theme of the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT) which was chosen to strengthen the shared responsibility in creating a drug-free community and environment.

Jonathan Lim Kok Haw, representing Brunei, spoke on: "If you knew a young person who felt lonely or bored, and this person was contemplating the use of illegal drugs, what would you say to him/her and why?"

The second place went to Jordan Kate Herrera Bakani from the Philippines and Su Win Htike from Myanmar was placed third.

Ten youth leaders from Asean countries delivered their views, opinions and positions as they expounded on topics randomly chosen all pertaining to drug abuse prevention.

The competition denotes another of the National Anti-Drug Association of Brunei Darussalam's (Basmida) anti-drug project.

Officiating at the competition was Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Hj Mohammad Hj Daud, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, who attended the event as guest of honour in support of Basmida's anti-drug efforts.

The competition, funded by the Singapore-Asean Youth Fund, represents a joint effort between Basmida and the National Youth Council of Singapore in a mutual cooperation at the international level between the two non-government organisations (NGOs) in increasing awareness on the scourge of drug abuse among youths.

During the event, Datin Hjh Masni Hj Mohd Ali, President of Basmida, delivered her speech where she spoke of the global fight against drug abuse problem which "transcends borders, affects all races and cultures indiscriminately".
