Halal Label rule now in force

Saturday, August 2, 2008
THE Halal Label Certificate and Halal Label Order 2005 came into force yesterday, the Department of Syariah Affairs' Halal Food Control Section announced.

The Order, which will ultimately determine what is halal or non-halal for food products sold in Brunei, will be carried out in stages, the department said in a media statement released yesterday.

Registration is currently open only to manufacturers of local halal food products who will be participating in the 3rd Brunei International Halal Expo that will be held on August 14 - 17.

Once the expo has ended, registration will be open to all local halal food manufacturers wishing to use the new halal logo on their products. A $50 charge will be placed on each product.

Interested applicants for the Brunei halal logo can obtain forms at the Halal Food Control Section during office hours. Completed forms must include the list of products and the ingredients used.

Officials will be conducting inspections on applicants' business premises to ensure the ingredients used are derived from a halal source, utensils used are only for processing halal food, as well as hygiene check-ups if necessary. If doubts arise over any ingredients used, laboratory tests will be conducted, the department said.

Inspection officers will also be conducting oral and written tests for the respective companies' halal food supervisors as stipulated in the rules and requirements of the Halal Label Certificate and Halal Label Order 2005.

The second stage of the Order, set to begin later in December this year, will allow owners of restaurants and food outlets to obtain halal certificates for their business premises. Forms can only be obtained then. There must be at least two halal food supervisors per site. Successful applicants for halal certificates will be an annual charge of $30 for each premise.
