THE High Court has found a 38-year old local unemployed father guilty of raping his two daughters and sentenced him to 18 years of imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane.
The sexual assaults were committed repeatedly between 2000 and 2006, when both daughters were under 14 years old, but the offences were only reported to the police in April 2006.
The father had denied the charges against him and a trial was held whereby the prosecution called 11 witnesses, including the victims, to prove the case. The court believed their testimony and convicted him after the trial. The prosecution was conducted by DPP Zuraini Haji Sharbawi while the defendant was unrepresented.
Judicial Commissioner Hairolani Haji Majid, in sentencing the defendant, stated that incestuous rapes are very serious offences and that a deterrent sentence must be imposed to reflect the seriousness of the offences committed.
