IN TODAY'S challenging world, where expectations of viewers are high, Radio Television Brunei (RTB) would need to improve and develop strategies that are adoptive, relevant and follow the constant changes that develop with the passing of time, remarked the Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office.

Dato Seri Paduka Hj Eusoff Agaki Hj Ismail, in his opening speech during the opening ceremony for RTB's new station in Tutong yesterday, highlighted the importance of providing programmes, which will attract sophisticated viewers to their television screens.

In light of this, the deputy minister encouraged RTB to ensure that their products, whether in news form or in the form of television programmes, are "dynamic, creative, substantive, innovative and more importantly, those that will attract viewers.

"At the same time, RTB must pay serious attention in delivering consistent information, in line with its status as the link between the government and the citizens of this country," Dato Seri Paduka Hj Eusoff Agaki added.

On the new station in Tutong, the deputy minister hoped that the location will now make it easier for RTB to showcase and promote activities in the Tutong District in a more planned manner and of a much higher quality.

More importantly, it is a clear sign of the government's growing concern in ensuring that communities outside the capital are not exempted.

Before ending his speech, the deputy minister highlighted that he was "confident that RTB will be a successful, respected and excellent station and maintain superior as the link between the government and the general public."

"In an ever changing environment, RTB should be able in carrying out its duties and responsibilities effectively, even when faced by various challenges brought about by change," he added.

After his speech, Dato Seri Paduka Hj Eusoff Agaki toured the facilities of the new station before posing for a group photo.

The new station, located in Sungai Basong, was completed last year after renovation works to the old structure.

The new station now has two studios, which will enable live transmission feeds to the studio in the capital.

According to a spokesperson from RTB, the station will also enable RTB to add more programmes in the future, with current plans to show live news transmissions once a week.

The news transmission will incorporate current events in Tutong and other community-oriented news.

RTB first began transmitting via radio on May 2, 1957, with a Hari Raya message from Al-Marhum Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien.

Television programmes were first introduced in 1975, with its first official launching on July 9, 1975 by His Majesty.

The mission of RTB has been to inform, to educate and to entertain. However, it is with its last mission that RTB has been found lacking.
