A SENIOR officer from the US Navy will be coming over to the sultanate next week in light of the annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (Carat) exercise between the Brunei and US Navies.

Rear Admiral Nora W Tyson, who will be on an introductory visit to the country, relieved Rear Admiral William R Burke as the US Navy's Commander, Logistics Group Western Pacific (COM LOGWESTPAC) in September last year.

In its capacity as the US Navy's bilateral exercise coordinator for Southeast Asia, the US Navy's COMLOGWEST PAC conducts advance planning, facilitates communication with host nations, promotes military to military relations, organises resources, and directly supports the execution of training exercises such as the annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) and Southeast Asia Cooperation Against Terrorism (Seacat) exercise series with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore.

The command was established at Port of Singapore Authority, Sembawang Terminal, in July 1992, after the commands relocation from Naval Station Subic Bay, the Philippines.

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Rear Adm Tyson graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in English. She attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, receiving her commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy in December of that year.

Rear Admiral Tyson reported for flight training in Pensacola, Florida after serving a brief tour ashore in Washington, DC. She earned her wings as a Naval Flight Officer in 1983.

She commanded the amphibious assault ship, USS Bataan, leading the ship's contributions to disaster relief efforts on the US Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and deploying twice to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I and II.

Other tours at sea included duty as Assistant Operations Officer aboard the training aircraft carrier, USS Lexington, and as Navigator aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.

Rear Admiral Tyson earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Affairs from US Naval War College in 1995. Her most recent tour was as Executive Assistant for the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, DC.
