Myanmar PM ends official visit

THE Myanmar Prime Minister, Thein Sein, yesterday left the country, ending his three-day official visit.

The visit by the Myanmar Prime Minister was his first to Brunei as Myanmar's premier. He was appointed on October 24 last year.

At the invitation of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the premier's visit was also part of his introductory tour to Asean member countries.

The 43-member Myanmar delegation included the Minister of National Planning and Economic Development, Minister of Commerce, Minister of Progress of Border Areas, National Races and Development Affairs, Minister of Transport, Minister of Energy, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director-General of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council.

During the visit, the delegation visited Brunei Shell Petroleum and held talks with the Brunei Economic Development Board to explore economic opportunities. General Thein Sein also had an audience and dinner banquet with His Majesty at Istana Nurul Iman.

The delegation also visited the Royal Regalia exhibition in the capital.

Earlier in the day, Myanmar Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Htay Oo paid a goodwill visit on Minister of Industry and Primary Resources Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Ahmad Hj Jumat. Among present to receive the Myanmar Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation yesterday were Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah Hj Abdul Wahab, deputy minister, MIPR; Pengiran Hjh Mariana Pengiran Dipa Negara Laila Diraja Pengiran Hj Abdul Momin, deputy permanent secretary, MIPR; Hjh Normah Suria Hayati Pehin Dato Seri Utama (Dr) Hj Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri, acting director of agriculture, MIPR; and senior officers of the ministry.

Diplomatic relations between Brunei and Myanmar were established in September 1993. Bilateral cooperation exceeds a number of areas including trade and education.

Imports from Myanmar include crude materials and food products whereas Brunei's exports to Myanmar comprise machinery and transport equipment.
