CRIME and other social problems are increasing rapidly in the Muara district and if left unchecked at this early stage the matter may get out of hand in near future, the officials said here yesterday.
Acting OCPD of Muara District Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohd Hadini Hj Othman in a meeting of village heads and penghulus with the Muara District Police held yesterday at the Muara District Police Headquarters said that cooperation among the police and public should always go hand in hand so that crime in the country can be closely monitored and prevented.
In the first meeting of the year with members of the public in the Muara district, DSP Mohd Hadini said that over the past three years crimes in the area had increased at an alarming rate from 162 cases in 2005 to 228 cases in 2008.
The crime rate in the area went down slightly in 2006 with 120 cases recorded during the year.
However this year there have been 57 cases that were reported during the past three months, said DSP Mohd Hadini.
The meeting was held as to form a closer alliance between the police and residents of the area through their village heads and penghulus especially through the Neighbourhood Watch programme which is currently dormant in the area.
Village heads and penghulus of the district reacted to the remark made by DSP Mohd Hadini by saying that some neighbourhood watches in the district are active in monitoring their community even though others are not.
The issue of neighbourhood watches was raised among other problems faced by the district by the village heads and penghulus who are constantly aware of what is happening in their areas.
According to DSP Mohd Hadini, the Muara District Police covers over three mukims namely Serasa, Mentiri and Kapok.
The population count in the three mukims together with foreign workers numbers roughly around 40,000 and the police need the full support and cooperation of the public in order to monitor the situation on a daily basis, said the police officer.
Theft and fights are among the most commonly reported cases in the area so far this year and without the assistance of the public to keep this in check, the probability of other serious offences being committed in the area may arise, added the Acting Commanding Officer.
According to the village heads and penghulu mukims, they would fully support the suggestions made by the police to revive the neighborhood watches in the area.
Around fourteen village heads and all three of the mukims peghulus attended the meeting where they discussed other issues relating to the safety of the people and social harmony in the area. The aim of the meeting was to strengthen the relations between the police and the mukims residents and to reintroduce the neighbourhood watch programme.
