LIFE in many parts of Brunei-Muara came to an abrupt halt yesterday due to major power disruption. Officials of the Department of Electrical Services (DES) blamed the power outage on technical fault at one of the substations in Gadong. Homes, businesses and traffic lights in more than 14 areas in the Brunei-Muara district were affected by the power outage. The DES officials said the technical fault at 11,000KV substation in the Rimba, Gadong area, had caused three major turbines at the Gadong Power Station Two to trip.

The affected areas were Kiulap, Kiarong, Subok, Tungku, Rimba, Mata Mata, Tanah Jambu, Mentiri, Salambigar, Manggis one and two, Jln Kebangsaan and Jangsak.

The DES officials received first call at 3.48pm — complaints came in from as far as Mentiri.

According to the Public Relations Officer of DES, maintenance teams were immediately dispatched to rectify the fault while a team of engineers focused their efforts on restoring power to the affected areas.

The officer said that DES was given a time limit of three hours for every power outage and they were able to achieve their task within the time limit.

The moment power supply was disrupted, the officer said, they redoubled their efforts to restore supply to the affected areas. "Fortunately enough we have the capability to redirect power from other power stations to compensate for the loss," he added.

"We are lucky to have the capability of synchronising power from other stations during power failures and we are capable of rectifying the situation within the given time," the officer said.

"The technical fault at substation in Rimba tripped three major turbines but fortunately the fault was detected early and we devoted our efforts to restoring the supply to affected areas," said the officer.

"At the moment we are synchronising the power distribution through our other power stations and hopefully we will be able to normalise supply to all affected areas shortly," added the officer.

At the time of the incident, work was under way to redistribute the power through the COGEN in Belait district, Bukit Panggal Power Station in Tutong and Gadong Power Station One.

Part of the recovery operation includes dispatching of independent power generators to the affected substation.

The power disruption carried on throughout the night as efforts to remedy the situation went under way. According to the DES officials, works that involve the major turbines normally take up to more than eight hours and hopefully the situation can be rectified before that. (SRH1)
