HIS Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, yesterday attended a Special Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting in Singapore.
The meeting was convened by Asean Standing Committee Chairman, George Yeo, Singapore's Minister of Foreign Affairs, to consider relief efforts for the victims of Cyclone Nargis in southern Myanmar.
Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar's central coast early this month, leaving more than 133,000 dead and missing and up to 2.5 million people in need of food, water, shelter and medicine.
The meeting received an assessment of the current situation and immediate needs in the affected areas by Myanmar Foreign Minister, Nyan Win, and reports from Asean Secretary-General Dr Surin Pitsuwan, on the secretariat's regional and international efforts in response to the humanitarian needs of the people affected by the cyclone.
A Chairman's Statement was issued in which the foreign ministers expressed appreciation for the international response to the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar and outlines a programme of relief and recovery under and Asean-led taskforce, headed by Secretary-General Pitsuwan.
