Hotspots bring haze back to Brunei

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

BRUNEI'S skies have been hazy of late, thanks to several hotspots in neighbouring countries.

According to the Asean Meteorological Centre (ASMC), numerous hotspots were detected in western Borneo and in Sumatra yesterday. Yesterday, the centre reported around 79 hotspots in Sumatra and 102 in Borneo. Despite hazy conditions, Brunei's air quality continues to be in good condition. The Pollution Standard Index (PSI) readings recorded from all the air quality monitoring stations (PM10) in the four districts have been under 50, which indicates good air quality. However, they are slightly higher, in the range of PSI 30 to PSI 35 as compared to the average of PSI 25. The highest reading of PSI 56 was recorded at one of the air quality monitoring stations on May 19.

PSI between 50 and 100 indicates moderate air quality, while those above 100 are considered unhealthy.

The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation continues to closely monitor the air quality in Brunei Darussalam. The public will be kept informed of the air quality situation through the RTB radio stations. In the meantime, the public is advised to refrain from conducting any open burning activities and other actions that may contribute to the hazy condition. (NAS1)
