THE India visit of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will give a new momentum to the friendly relations between the countries, according to Indian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Riewad V Warjri last week.

Talking about the significance of His Majesty's four-day visit, Warjri said India and Brunei have always had cordial relations and Brunei has always supported the Indian cause at all Asean forums, including India becoming a Full Dialogue Partner of Asean.

The Indian High Commissioner said His Majesty's visit is a major milestone as it will not only witness the signing of eight to 10 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) but also will pave the way for another eight to 10 MoUs.

Regarding areas of cooperation between the two countries, the Indian High Commissioner said apart from oil and gas, there were numerous areas where both countries can mutually benefit. One area, which he specifically pointed out, was Brunei's diversification drive.

In this regard, Warjri said India can help Brunei's plan to encourage Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) by offering them training programmes.

He said young Bruneian entrepreneurs can take advantage of the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Asia Centre in Chandigarh. The Centre's mission is to provide young citizens of the Commonwealth with critical knowledge, skills and opportunities in the development and governance of their communities and societies.

On the cooperation on the ICT front, the Indian High Commissioner suggested that Brunei invest in Tech Park in any Indian city where personnel from Brunei can be trained and the Tech Park can help Brunei in its e-Government plan.

Another area he mentioned specially is the cooperation in the field of telecommunications. He said in August 1997 under an agreement, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) set up an Indian TTC (Telemetry, Tracking and Command) Centre in Brunei in 1999 as part of the Indian space programme for its Geo-synchronous Launch Vehicles (GSLV), adding because of its geographical location Brunei is the best site for tracking satellite movement.
