HER Royal Highness Princess Hjh Masna, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, yesterday left for Myanmar to discuss relief efforts for the cyclone-affected at the Asean-UN International Pledging Conference.

The joint international aid conference in Yangon will focus on the needs of those affected by Cyclone Nargis and seek international support and financial assistance for long-term recovery efforts.

The two organisations say the ministerial meeting, being held today, is in recognition of the outpouring of international solidarity and support.

Officials from more than 45 countries and regional organisations are expected to attend the conference, which hopes to alleviate the devastating impact of the cyclone suffered by the people of Myanmar.

In a joint statement, the secretary general of the United Nations and chair of Asean called on the international community to rise to the occasion and translate their solidarity and sympathy into concrete commitments to help the people of Myanmar emerge from the disaster and rebuild their lives.

The United Nations estimates that 1.5 million to two million people were severely affected by the cyclone. The official death toll stands at about 78,000, with 56,000 missing.

Her Royal Highness was accompanied by Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Hj Abdul Aziz. (HAN1) (See also Page 9)
