Govt studies new use for biometric technology

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

THE government is studying the use of biometric technology for other applications after the recent launch of its new passport which uses the technology, according to a statement from Institut Teknologi Brunei.

This is in line with its e-government initiative which is aimed at improving public service.

Brunei proposed an e-Asean programme in 2001, with the aim of facilitating the establishment of an Asean information infrastructure and to develop capacity building.

To achieve this vision, the government allocated $900 million to develop the infrastructure for e-government initiatives and to set up the Brunei Darussalam Information Technology Council.

The council aims to promote effective IT application, facilitating best practice in the private sector and reducing costs of doing business-to-business and business-to-consumer ties.

Brunei recently introduced its biometric passport, joining a select group of Asean nations with the same kind of system.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said the launch of the e-passport will put Brunei on par with Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

Biometric technology is a field of technology that has been and is being used in the identification of individuals based on some physical attributes, the statement said.

It said there are two types of biometrics: behavioural and physical. Behavioural biometrics such as speech recognition, signature and keystrokes are used for verification, while physical biometrics such as fingerprint, facial recognition, iris scan, retinal scan, vascular patterns and hand geometry are used for either identification or verification.
