THE Wasan Vocational School was established as a measure to boost the nation's primary resources sector, especially as agriculture and fishery are considered important fields in the drive towards economic diversification.
This was said by Acting Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR), Pg Hjh Mariana PDNLDR Pg Hj Abd Momin during the launching of orientation week for Wasan Vocational School's third intake of students yesterday.
In diversifying the country's economy through the argiculture and fishery fields, the main strategy she said, is to "heighten the level of National Food Security through the enhancement of capability level in production of quality, safe and halal food commodity".
She listed out the three areas in enhancing the level of food security: local commodity's availability, affordability and accessibility.
The national food security needs coordinated actions which include enhancing the capability to produce local products; efficient management of import goods; the need to have an international agreement on agriculture and fishery commodity trade, management of food reserves for national food security.
From the economic aspect, the benefits from developing the primary resources sector are the efficient usage of economy sources, enhancement of local production, nation capability to balance import substitution as well as agriculture sector contribution in support of the government's aspiration towards diversifying the country's economy.
"It is a challenge that needs an effective approach in the government's effort to make the agriculture and fishery industry competitive and profitable, one that can safeguard the livelihood of local farmers and fishermen," she said. "The industry should also be able to generate job opportunities for the local people."
The top agenda in the development of the primary resources sector is the development of capabilities through the readiness of infrastructure and the human resources development.
Some 60 students were accepted to the vocational school in national diploma and national trade certificate 3 courses as the school's third intake. They will begin their classes on July 14, 2008.
