THE Pakistani Supreme Court yesterday announced it would hear a petition from the country's top judge against his suspension by President Pervez Musharraf on charges of misconduct.
A court spokesman told AFP that a 14-member full bench would start hearing the case on May 14, amid indications the legal battle may drag on for weeks.
The court on Monday suspended an inquiry into misconduct charges against Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry by a panel called Supreme Judicial Council (SJC).
Chaudhry in his 132-point petition has challenged the misconduct charges against him, the composition of SJC, and the decision to send him on forced leave, his lawyers said. The legal community and opposition parties welcomed Monday's decision which commentators said opened a way to resolve the two-month-old judicial crisis.AFP
