BRUNEI and Singapore engaged in an exchange of cultural understanding and experience yesterday when a 31-member delegation from Singapore's Institute of Policy Development (IPD) conducted a study visit to the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Berakas.

In her welcoming speech, the ministry's public relations officer, Malai Norain Sheikh Mohammad, told members of the delegation that the ministry had "the privilege of hosting delegations from Singapore Civil Services over the years".

This is the fourth such visit by a Singaporean delegation. This "exposure to the workings and culture in Brunei" will provide Singaporeans with a better understanding of Brunei and strengthen bilateral friendship.

The delegation, headed by Lai Wei Lim, deputy director of IPD, is on a three-day visit to enhance cultural understanding among its Asean neighbours.

"The Ministry of Religious Affairs is mainly tasked to uphold Islam as the official religion and to fully implement it in every aspect of governance and administration," Dk Jauyah Pg Hj Md Zaini, assistant director of the Islamic Legal Unit, said.

In her briefing on "The Practice of Islam in Brunei Darussalam", she explained the actual working practice of the nation's official religion.

The session concluded with a dialogue between the visitors and Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Rahman Hj Mohiddin, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

The Singaporean institute was established in 1993 to provide "an institutional focal point to preserve core traditions and shape values, as well as conduct high level courses for senior administrators in the Singaporean public service".

It has since embarked on a series of development programmes geared towards leadership development and public governance, including overseas working visits.
