For 'new' that is not new

Monday, April 7, 2008

REGARDING the report "Spending on others can make one happy: Study" and the article on this subject by Mr Todd McPherson, "Can money buy happiness?" published two weeks ago in The Brunei Times, the essence of the finding comes as no surprise to us.

The basic tenets and injunctions of any religion are for man to do good, protect, help, save and respect their fellow human beings, even the entire environment and all life. Muslims adduce those specific Islamic tenets and practices on helping others voluntarily from the Holy Quran of Allah Most High, which is replete with Divine Advice and Reminders for us to freely, voluntarily help others and be kind and compassionate to them. "Spending on others" in Quranic terminology is sadaqah, translated as almsgiving or charity. There are more than 30 Surahs including 90 Verses in the Holy Quran on sadaqah. We just hope that one day religious sources will be included among empirical data illustrating "new" theories.
