DEFENDING champions Faculty of Science (FOS) yesterday set up a final date with Faculty of Business, Economics and Policy Studies (FBEPS) I after coming from behind to defeat Institute of Medicine (IM) 56-49 in the semi-finals of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Basketball Club Inter-Faculty Basketball tournament at the UBD Sports Complex in Tungku Link near here.
National cager, Yap Chun Ping, had a game-high 35 points to lead FOS while Bernard Lim and David Choo contributed 10 points.
On the other hand, Tan Jun Seng topscored for IM with 18 points and Sky Lim poured in 10 points to a losing cause.
IM started out the better of the two teams as they were shooting well from the perimeter. They also had the height advantage and used it to control the boards.
FOS were playing a running game as Yap stepped it up a notch to score the final 16 points for his team as they grabbed the lead at 25-24 heading into halftime.
FOS shot well from the field at the beginning of the second half which allowed them to extend their lead to 33-29 after five minutes into the period.
IM despite the size advantage continued to deal the damage on offence from the outside. Sensing their opponents' low stamina, FOS pushed the ball up the court quickly as they opened up a double-digit lead at 46-36.
But Sky was on fire from the field to pull his team within one-point at 46-47 with two minutes left in the game.
FOS turned to Yap once again as he carried his team with six straight unanswered points to steal victory.
"I think our performance today (Tuesday) was okay. IM were on fire in the beginning and this allowed them to open up a lead as big as eight points, but we just grabbed the momentum which allowed us back into the game," said Yap after the match.
Yap pointed out that their defence and teamwork were key in ensuring them the victory.
Asked about the final, the 23-year-old national player replied: "I think we'll do alright with the way we're playing but we'll have to give it our best to win the title again."
In the day's second semi-final, FBEPS I defeated Easyway of Institut Teknologi Brunei 41-35 in a closely contested game.
Ng Lit How led FBEPS I with 16 points while Alex Wui Kiat Soon had a game-high 28 points for Easyway.
"I think everyone on the team played badly today (Tuesday). But we managed to control the tempo of the game in the last few possessions including some defensive stops that helped us win the game," said Lim Kok Shien, the playing coach of FBEPS I.
"We just picked up our defence that saw them commit turnovers. This was key and we were more experienced than our opponents," continued Kok Shien.
Asked about their chances to dethrone FOS, Kok Shien replied: "We are going into the final as underdogs. I know that they are a full package as a team with better fitness and deeper bench. However, we will give them a good game."
The final is slated to start at 5.40pm on Thursday right after the third place playoff at 4.30pm.
