LAKSAMANA College of Business recently handed over a cheque for $300 which will be one of many prizes that will be awarded to the over-all winner of the Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien (Soas) College National English Essay Writing Competition.
The competition is now closed and the judging panel comprising representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Brunei English Language Teachers Association (Belta) and CfBT Education Services are in the process of selecting the finalists.
The competition which was open to all secondary students in government schools in Brunei hopes to encourage students to engage with important issues using the medium of English.
Other prizes include an i-touch, i-pods, cash savings accounts and goodie bags.
The prizes worth $2,000 have been sponsored by establishments such as Standard Chartered Bank and The Radisson Hotel.
Project Manager for the SOAS College National English Essay Writing Competition, Fahim Docrat said, "we thank Laksamana College of Business for recognising the value of such an event. Their support highlights the importance of partnerships with the private sector which ensures that our youth are given every opportunity to excel and make a positive contribution to society."
"We were very impressed with the facilities we saw during our tour of the LCB Campus and we are in the process of planning various educational visits by our students to LCB so they can explore other academic opportunities after successfully completing their secondary schooling."
LCB Chief Operating Officer, Sivarajah said, "Laksamana College of Business believes that events such as the Soas College National English Essay Writing Competition will not only improve the command of language but also help build self confidence as well as promote healthy competition among the younger generation. The topic chosen for this event The Year 2035 will allow the students to picture how they would like to shape their future as well as the future of the nation."

A prize-giving ceremony will be held on 5 May, 2011 at the Soas College Auditorium where the winners will receive their prizes.
