SOME 50 Alumni of Laksmana College of Business (LCB) gathered at their beloved college during the Alumni night held at the college's multipurpose hall, last Thursday.

Present as the guest of honour was Cheong Huat Joo, assistant director (Secondary Education) of the Department of Schools, a representative of Hj Suhaila Hj Karim, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education (MoE).

Also present were Ian Pirie, director and principal of LCB and Kensington College of Business, Julian Miller, Deputy British High Commissioner, and Stuart Kemp, president of Britain Brunei Business Forum (BBBF).

In his speech, Cheong stated that since its inception LCB has successfully provided over 800 local and international students with the opportunity to further their education, with some 100 have completed their studies at various universities in the UK such as University of Wales, Northumbria University, University of Glamorgan, University of Hull and University of the West of England.

He added that every year MoE awards LCB's BA Common Year One students scholarships to further their studies in the UK for Year Two and Three.

"Last Year six students have received the scholarship and successfully completed Year Two in the UK, while this year four students have been awarded the scholarship."

In concluding his speech, Cheong said that the new education allowance structure provision announced by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, will bring the public-private partnership between the ministry and the private educational institutions such as LCB to a new level.

Meanwhile, Pirie stated the college's success was primarily due to the possibility of earning a British qualification but at a lower cost than studying for a degree in the UK.

This is a direct result of the twinning degree programmes that the college offers, which sees students doing their first year in LCB before going abroad for Year Two and Three, depending on their examinations results.

The night ended with the recitation of doa selamat. The Brunei Times
