RESTAURANT Azriyah Laila, which just recently opened its doors and is the only restaurant in the Sultanate that serves Beras Laila, has introduced an authentic dish featuring the locally-produced rice as the main attraction.

Head Chef Hjh Rabiah Puteh said, "As a new restaurant, we want to introduce Beras Laila, to see the public response. So far, we have cooked it Nasi Lemak style, with acar and salted eggs as the sides."

The chef said that the restaurant will try to experiment with the rice more, although it proves to be quite challenging. "Due to the soft texture of Beras Laila, it is not suitable for certain dish styles, such as fried rice and curry," she explained.

According to her, aside from being locally-produced, Beras Laila is a healthy alternative staple suitable for those with diabetes and high cholesterol.

She added that the rice can last several hours longer than imported rice, making it an ideal alternative, and that it offers better value for money for the new restaurant due to a steady stream of local suppliers from Kampung Wasan and local farmers.

The restaurant's location adds to the pull factor for those who wish to try out the authentic dish, she said, due to it being located far from competitors with similar offerings.

The restaurant is currently only offering one Beras Laila dish, with chicken or beef rendang as the mains, with other dining options to choose from, such as Nasi Katok, Soto Kawin, Mee Goreng Ayam and Kolo Mee Daging. The restaurant's Roti Telur is another popular dish to try out.

The public can sample for themselves the hearty dishes at Simpang 1973, Jln Junjungan, Lumapas. Azriyah Laila is open from 7am to 9.30pm daily. The Brunei Times
