MAKTAB Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah has been striving to improve its students' academic achievements in the GCE 'A' level examinations, whereby almost 96 per cent of its students have passed with at least one GCE 'A' level.

For the last GCE 'A' Level Examination in 2006, 54 percent of the upper six students achieved 3 GCE 'A' Level and such achievements have always been an interest for the college so that they can help more students to achieve 3 GCE 'A' Level and higher.

This was disclosed by Hj Muhd Musa Muhd Sa'idun, the principal of Maktab Duli during the college's Academic Awards ceremony for Lower Sixth End of Year Examination 2007 yesterday.

Among the awards presented during the ceremony were the Top Students award which was received by 11 students, the Top Achievers in Group Tutor award for 24 students, Top Achievers for hostellites award, Top Achievers award by subjects and also the awards for International Competition and Assessment for Schools English Medals winners.

Among the top students awarded during the ceremony was Chan Chung San, who achieved five straight A's in the subjects of Further Mathematics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Thinking Skills. When interviewed, the student said that he was very happy with his achievements and cites his family as a motivation for his success.

"I thank my parents for giving me all the support I need, but somehow I always feel that anyone can achieve good results, because I think the most important thing for me to achieve success in my studies is to just listen and understand what the teachers taught us during class. We shouldn't be afraid to ask the teachers because the outcome will benefit ourselves and not others," he said.

Chan Chung San, who is planning to get into Cambridge University, said that his favourite subjects are sciences and mathematics.

Hon Chii Haw also achieved five straight A's in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Thinking Skills. He told The Brunei Times that he is very happy with his results and glad to have made his parents proud.

He advised other students to stay calm during the exam season, and to do revisions and prepare in advance instead of studying at the last minute.

Shim De Zhen, one of the students who achieved the award for Top Achievers by Group Tutors, also said that examinations are hard for everybody and every student in Maktab Duli is striving to their best but it's always the way we study that is important to achieve good grades.
