Brunei makes education compulsory

Friday, January 25, 2008

EDUCATION has been made compulsory for all children in the country between the age of six and 15, whether at government schools or private institutions, under the Compulsory Education Order 2007.

The order came into affect on November 24 last year, after it received the assent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

The order ensures that the nation's children will receive at least nine years of schooling, that is, from primary one to secondary three.

This was disclosed yesterday in a speech delivered by Deputy Education Minister Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad Pg Hj Abd Rahman on behalf of the minister, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Hj Abdul Rahman Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohamed Taib.

The Order is also hoped to strengthen and support the current 12 Years Education Policy under the present National Education System, as the former has legal enforcement.

The public is therefore reminded that, upon commencement of the Order, all children of compulsory school age, being born on or after January 2002, who are citizens of Brunei Darussalam and residing in the country, are required by law to be registered and attend schools as pupils, except those granted exemption as stated under the Order.

Failure to comply can lead to a contravention and render each parent of such child liable to legal action.
