NATIONAL lawn bowler Hj Naim Brahim sent shock waves among the sporting fraternity yesterday by announcing that he was not part of the contingent which competed in the 2008 World Bowls Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand which ended last Sunday.
Contrary to previous reports, the 2007 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medallist was not at the Bowlside Bowling Club in Christchurch competing in the men's singles discipline.
In addition, it was also reported that Amp Hjh Lilymariani Amp Hj Salleh was among the players who travelled to New Zealand to compete in the women's triples and fours events, which was also false.
Speaking to The Brunei Times, one of the country's most lauded lawn bowler said he wished to clear his name.
"The reports have sullied my reputation, especially since the real representative in the event only managed to win two out of 10 matches," said Hj Naim.
Information regarding the names of the athletes were derived from national lawn bowls head coach Mohd Aziz Maswadi through a short message system (SMS) sent to The Brunei Times at the Brunei International Airport before departing to New Zealand on January 9.
The tournament's website (www.worldbowls2008.com) also states that Hj Naim and Amp Hjh Lilymariani were participants in the event.
