THE local press were treated to a re-enactment of Steve Job's dramatic introduction of the Apple MacBook Air yesterday at its official launch in January.

The notebook, which emerged as the world's thinnest portable computer at the much-talked-about Macworld Expo in San Francisco, was then famously extracted from a brown A4-sized manila envelope, an idea which was also used in Apple's TV advertisements.

Nevertheless, the tactic did not fail to draw gasps of awe from members of the local media when sales representatives from Apple premium reseller AV Electronics organised a sneak preview of Apple's latest demonstration of "bigger is not always better".

At its thinnest point, the MacBook Air has a height of 0.16 inches and is 0.76 inches at its thickest.

The notebook is powered by a 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a 4MB L2 cache, which is 60 per cent smaller than the original processor and was developed specifically for the MacBook Air.

The super-thin processor will only be available for competing brands at a later date.

The Apple MacBook Air starts at $2,988 for the standard 1.6 GHz with an 80GB 1.8-inch hard disk with Sudden Motion Sensor technology and a non-upgradable DDR2 RAM size of 2GB. Those after higher specifications can upgrade the basic model to 1.8GHz processing power for $3,440, and a 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a 64GB solid state drive will cost $5,088.

Users can also look forward to Apple's innovative multi-touch TrackPad, which supports different user gestures such as tap, scroll, pinch, rotate and swipe.

Other features include the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, a built-in iSight video camera and Airport Extreme 802.11n wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR.

Despite the downsizing of all its components, the standard size for MacBook screens and keyboards were not compromised.

The MacBook Air sports a 13.3-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display with a maximum resolution of 1280x800.

A viable option for MacBook Air users is the Time Capsule device, also launched at the Macworld Expo, which will allow automatic wireless data backup to remote PC or Mac locations.

The Apple MacBook Air will be unveiled to the public today at AV Electronics in Kiulap at 3pm.The Brunei Times
