Decline in HFMD cases in first quarter of 2008

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

BRUNEI has recorded a decline in Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD), with the first quarter figures of 2008 markedly less from last year's.

A statement from the Ministry of Health highlighted that in the first three months last year, Brunei saw 176 cases compared to 98 in the first quarter of this year.

In the months of January, February and March this year, there were 23, 32 and 43 cases respectively, which was a decrease to the corresponding numbers of 46, 113 and 117 cases experienced over the same period in 2007. The trend has continued in the month of April, with 24 cases recorded as of April 27 2008, whereas a total of 43 incidences were recorded in April 2007.

Out of the 24 cases, only two required treatment within the hospital, whilst the other cases were treated as outpatients at hospitals, the statement said.

Meanwhile, with the outbreak of HFMD in Singapore recently, the Ministry of Health would like to remind the public to maintain a high level of hygiene and continue to take steps which would wipe out HFMD.

The public are encouraged to wash their hands using soap and water after using the restroom, before preparing food and after carrying out work around the house.

Children who have been diagnosed with HFMD are advised to stay away from crowded areas, such as markets, commercial shopping areas and public pools.

Children are also discouraged from attending school if they carry symptoms of HFMD so as to not infect other children.

Siblings of those with HFMD are advised not to play together until they are fully recovered.

The ministry also called on parents to bring children to the hospital, should children show any of the symptoms of HFMD, which include weakness or frailty, loss of appetite, vomiting, pale, high fever, short breaths and heart palpitations.(ISY1)
