THE majority of the remaining e-government projects that the Brunei government is expected to implement in the next several years will provide sufficient business and development opportunities for local IT companies to grow and become stronger commercial entities, the chief executive of the Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AiTi) said yesterday.

"I believe the implementation of these remaining projects can be capitalised to develop the local ICT industry to the next level by introducing new programs, schemes and incentives that are conducive in encouraging intellectual property (IP) ownership, transfer of know-how and the development of local human resources," said Pg Hj Mohd Zain Pg Hj Abdul Razak told about 100 delegates who converged yesterday at Rizqun International Hotel for a business-matching session between local and Malaysian IT companies.

The event, aimed at establishing long-term ties between ICT players of both countries was participated by 20 local IT companies and 21 Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) status companies from neighbouring Malaysia.

"Hopefully this is the start of a longer-term relationship between Malaysian and Bruneian companies for other markets outside of the two countries," said Dato' Mohd Badlisham Ghazali, the CEO of Multimedia Development Corporation (MDEC) Malaysia. "We are extending an open invitation to Bruneian agencies and government to visit Malaysia and learn a lot more about how we implement things."

AiTi and MDEC, which share common objectives in nurturing their respective local IT industries, are currently working towards the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) within the next few months, according to Pg Hj Mohd Zain. The MoU is hoped to provide a strong foundation for closer collaborative mechanism between Brunei and Malaysian ICT players in areas of mutual interest, including venturing out together in the regional market, he said.

The regulatory body organised a similar business-matching session in March last year, as well as a government-to-government knowledge sharing and networking session between selected government departments of Brunei and Malaysia. The Brunei Times
