THE Ministry of Health has detected an adulterant which causes caused adverse health problems in Malaysian-manufactured product Maajun Kuat Sakit Pinggang by Abd Aziz Hj Mat.
The substance chlorpheniramine was detected in the product which is being sold as traditional medicine for rheumatism, according to a press statement from the Ministry of Health yesterday.
The ministry discovered that the adulterant was present in the product after a female diabetic in her sixties complained of "swelling of face and legs" and informed her doctor that she had been taking the product. Chlorpheniramine can cause severe adverse reaction such as dizziness, lowering of blood pressure, confusion, incoordination and drowsiness.
The substance should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional, and is classified as a controlled substance under the Poisons Act. No approval has been given by the ministry for the importation and sale of this product.
Consumers who have been taking this product are advised to stop taking it immediately and to discard it. If they experience any adverse reactions or feel unwell, they should consult their doctors immediately.
The ministry reminded the public that it is an offence to sell the product under Poison Act 1956. The penalty of such an offence upon conviction is a fine of $8000 or imprisonment of six months. (YZH1)
