IN AN effort to create a more integrated waste management collection system for Brunei, the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation under the Ministry of Development has con-structed a new waste collection centre located at the Housing Resettlement Scheme in Kampung Rimba.
The new waste collection centre, which has been in operation and opened for public since the start of the new year, also houses a porta-cabin with basic utilities and recycling bins.
The centre is seen as an addition to the existing network of waste collection centres that are equipped with electrical compactors which are capable of handling a relatively large volume of wastes.
In a statement made by the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, they hope the public can play their role to utilise the available facilities.
According to a statistic made by the Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies (CSPS) on solid waste production, in 2005 it was recorded that the average solid waste collection in Brunei-Muara was 354 tonnes per day while in Brunei as a whole, the country generates 189,000 tonnes of waste per year or 518 tonnes per day, or around 1.4 kg per person per day or almost 511 kg per person per year.
Thus, according to an article from CSPS, it takes an efficient and effective system which covers the waste collection to the disposal without neglecting the environment and health as to guarantee Brunei becomes a truly clean and healthy country.
Part of this waste management system is the utilisation of waste collection centres.
However, in order to guarantee a working strategic planning, the importance of the involvement from the parties should be involved. (AFH)
