THREE students were awarded for their best short videos under the Asean NewsMaker Project which will be featured in the Asean Media Portal.

The project, which was launched on Monday, were partcipated by some 10 primary pupils and 10 secondary students from different schools utilizing a software called the NewsMaker to produce video clips that touches on aspects of life in the country.

Jointly organised by Brunei's Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Media Development Authority (MDA) of Singapore, the project was aimed to foster a closer and collaborative relationship among Asean youths that would simultaneously provide insight into their respective lives and cultures with the use of digital technology, as well as encourage students on the responsible use of news media.

"Participants of the project were given the opportunity to learn to produce informative video clips that serve to provide better understanding of the culture and lifestyle of their country," said EyePower Games Chief Operating Officer Phan Seow Kang who facilitated the two-day training on the use of the NewsMaker software.

Produced by EyePower Games Singapore, the NewsMaker software allows students to create video clips in broadcast-news video format with the help of a web camera and a PC microphone.

"The project helps participants to develop their language skills as they will be taught how to effectively narrate and tell a story," he added.

The three winners received their prizes from the guest of honour, Hjh Norjum Hj Mohd Yussop, the Deputy Permanent Secretary (Corporate Services) at the Ministry of Education in a ceremony held at Seameo-Voctech, yesterday.

The winners were Nur Farah Nasuha Othman from Sayyidina Hussain Secondary School who produced a video on "Brunei's Tourist Attraction", Mohd Nabil Mohd Fauzi from Lumut Primary School with his video on "Brunei's Vanishing Trait"s and Mohd Amir Salman Mohd Azman from Ahmad Tajuddin Primary School with his video on "Brunei's Variety of Food".

"All video clips arising from the Asean NewsMaker Project, including the ones produced today, will be shared with the world through the Asean Media Portal," said Cassandra Tay, the Director of Communications, Community and International Relations from Singapore's MDA.

According to Cassandra, the Asean Media Portal, which was launched in 2007, served as a repository of multimedia clips on news, documentaries, heritage and tourism information of Asean member countries.

"The video clips by the Asean Newsmaker Project participants will add valuable content to the existing store of regional cultural information on the AseanMedia Portal which will make it a fascinating window to the different sights, sounds and stories of Asean - both for Asean citizens as well as for the rest of the world.
