A POSSIBLE collaboration on telecommunications services between Brunei and Canada was discussed during a meeting between High Commissioner of Canada to the country and Minister of Home Affairs at the ministry's building yesterday.

Wendell J Sandford met with Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohd Yusof during a courtesy call, where they took the opportunity to discuss issues of mutual interest, particularly concerning a possible collaboration with Canadian-based firm Norsat International, a satellite communications technology specialist. It's expertise can be used to set up telecommunications services for the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) to better predict weather anomalies or any impending threat that might hit the country.

The high commissioner also talked about a fairly new innovation created by another Canadian company, Plantiga Technologies, who has developed special footwear that could track an individual. This system could be used by Prisons and the Fire and Rescue Departments to track prisoners and prison guards as well as firemen in certain emergency scenarios such as a burning building.

Such technology could also be used for tracking fire personnel in case they get into trouble.

The Canadian envoy previously served as Director at the Oceans and Environmental Law Division of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Canada.

Canada established diplomatic relations with Brunei in 1984, following Brunei's independence.

Brunei opened its chancery in Ottawa in 1995 and Canada did so in Bandar Seri Begawan the following year. (AFH1)
