IN-LINE skaters Md Shopian Said and Md Samsul Mohamed will represent Brunei at the inaugural Singapore Extreme Championship today.
A source close to the skaters said that another skater, Bahrumnuddin Hj Jaili, might also take part if he could register in time.
The practice rounds will be held in the morning while the first heat will be held in the afternoon. The final of the two-day extreme sports competition at the new skate park at East Coast is slated for tomorrow.
The S$8 million Xtreme SkatePark @ East Coast will be launched by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong today and to mark the occasion, the park will be hosting the inaugural Singapore Extreme Championship.
Aggressive in-line skating, BMX freestyling and skateboarding are the three sports being contested and some 80 participants from Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines are registered to compete.
The event will be broadcast live on ESPN at 9am today. It is uncertain whether the Sultanate will be represented in the BMX freestyling and skateboarding.
It is the first time such an extreme sports competition is being held in Singapore, said a joint statement by the Singapore Parks Board, Singapore Youth Council and Singapore Community Development, Youth and Sports Ministry.
It is also the first and only skate park in Singapore of world class competition standards.(JT04)
