LAKSAMANA COLLEGE OF BUSINESS (LCB) beat Sekolah Menengah Jamalul Alam (SMJA) 64-34 in the opening game of the 2009 UBD Cup basketball tournament at the UBD Sports Complex in Tungku Link near here yesterday.

The game started out slow with LCB 4-2 in front after five minutes. LCB could have taken a bigger lead if they had converted their fast break opportunities.

As the game progressed, LCB stepped up a notch with Darren Wong Teck Huen leading the offence proving unstoppable in the paint, scoring at will. With his huge frame compared to the SMJA players, Wong was able to hit almost every shot from under the basket. He finished the game with 14 points mostly coming in the first half.

With their size advantage and better post-up play, LCB were able to draw fouls from their opponents and add to their points from the charity stripe.

Damian Lee Chin Yique of SMJA tried to keep the game close with his sharp shooting, but the score at halftime saw LCB lead 26-11.

The second half was played at a faster tempo as LCB continued to seize control of the game. Justin Ling Jia Hau, who top scored for LCB with 21 points, made numerous baskets with his quick skills slashing to the basket at will.

Halfway through the second period, SMJA staged a minor comeback by making back to back baskets taking the score to 38-25. But that was as close as they got as LCB started to pull further away.

The tournament continues today with the first match beginning at 2pm pitting UBD B against Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College.
