Shahrain to PTE Katok's rescue

Saturday, July 4, 2009

SHAHRAIN ZULKIFLI'S last second circus shot was the game winning basket that separated Katok Sixth Form Centre (PTE Katok) from Science College (MSPSBS) giving PTE Katok a 50-49 victory in the 2009 MD Cup basketball tournament at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat yesterday.

With four seconds left in the game Jamri Ramlee cut to the basket but missed the layup. Shahrain got the rebound to score his only basket of the game and hand his team the victory.

"I use that move a lot so it has become quite natural for me," said Shahrain. "I guess it was a lucky shot as well because it could have easily been a block."

MSPSBS led for most of the first half until Soon Jian Liang scored on a jump shot at the buzzer to tie the scores at 17 apiece.

MSPSBS then opened up a 10-point lead with less than four minutes left in the second half taking the scores to 46-35. PTE Katok quickly bounced back after a timeout to make it 47-45 in their rivals' favour with two minutes to play.

Maxim Yap, head coach of PTE Katok, had been putting his hopes on his big man Soon to get the job done for his team.

"The main strategy was to feed the big guy but then he's probably too tired because he just had a game last night," said Yap.

The second match of the day saw Laksamana College of Business thrash International School Brunei 69-36 while the last match of the day saw Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College (SOASC) clobber Seri Mulia Serjana School 71-32. (YCL 04)
