US diplomat calls on His Majesty

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, received in audience the US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell at Istana Nurul Iman yesterday afternooon.

Assistant Secretary Campbell arrived in Brunei on Friday for a three-day working visit to the Sultanate as part of his tour of the Asean region.

Earlier in the morning, Campbell met with His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and US Ambassador William E Todd for a meeting at Balai Penghadapan, Bukit Kayangan.

Following the audience with His Majesty, the assistant secretary toured the capital where he had the opportunity to view the construction progress of the new US Embassy building at the diplomatic enclave in Jalan Kebangsaan.

After the tour, Campbell, accompanied by senior US embassy officials, then attended a high tea reception at the residence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng.

Campbell will be leaving Brunei today to continue his tour of the region to Indonesia, Thailand and Japan.

This is Campbell's first visit to Brunei since assuming his duties as Assistant Secretary of East Asian and Pacific Affairs in June 2009.
