THE chairperson of the Asia-Pacific Committee of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) yesterday called for more improvements and active participation in world forums from Bruneian members.

WAGGGS' June Cameron yesterday told The Brunei Times that the presence of young Brunei Girl Guides was rare at events such as the World Youth Conference, The Juliette Low Seminar (an opportunity for young women to develop international leadership, friendship and understanding) and WAGGGS Leadership Development Programme (WLDP).

"For some reason, the youth members from the association, have not been participating as much as we hoped," she said.

"We urge them to send their young women," she added.

Attending these activities, said Cameron, helped develop self-confidence and nurture a wider vision as well as a broader appreciation of people.

"It's all about growing their skills, taking on responsibility and leadership. That's what's wonderful about guiding,"she said.

Cameron also said that these young women also play a more important role in the society. "At Copenhagen 15, WAGGGS had a delegation of 26 young women who attended the youth division and their voice was heard on climate change,"she said.

"Well-prepared, the young women have a place in society that becomes the voice of young girls and the women are heard. They spoke out and made a difference," Cameron added. The Brunei Times
