Wrong posting triggers credit card confusion

AN INCORRECT narrative on credit card statements has caused major confusion among card holders in Brunei Darussalam, with a local company being wrongly named on the statements.

William Chong, one of those affected by the incorrect posting on his credit card statement, found out others had also made the same discovery from his bank.

"The teller from HSBC said others were also affected," he said.

He approached the bank after checking his receipts and found no history of the transaction.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, Nooreen Affandy, Store Supervisor of Shop @Lisa Sarah's, the company wrongly named on the statements, said: "We got in touch with the merchant providers for the banks, Global Payments and Merchant Solutions who process the payments for the banks and they informed us that there was a mistake in the narrative."

Nooreen added that Shop @ Lisa Sarah’s were informed that the transactions were incorrectly posted to them, however, the money was transferred to the appropriate accounts.

"We were told that those who had standing orders for their credit cards to pay their Kristal Astro subscriptions were affected," she said, and as a result the statements instead had read Shop @ Lisa Sarah’s.

"As some card holders have only received their statements recently there are still those who were not aware of the error, and more complaints were made to the store yesterday," said Nooreen.

An anonymous civil servant said banks should "rectify the situation immediately".

"The wrong company’s name has come out on the statement and they would have been subjected to a lot of query despite no wrongdoing," said the mother of one.

She called for those responsible not to make the same mistakes again.

"In my case it was on my Standard Chartered (credit) card, and others in the same boat were from HSBC," she said.

Meanwhile, a Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) statement issued yesterday said that they have clarified with their customers. "We have contacted those concerned that the transaction is genuine, but due to a technical error the merchant narrative posted was incorrect," said a spokesperson, adding that "the error has since been rectified".
