Seminars for the Global Competitiveness through Creativity and Innovation (Cipta) 2011 awards have received a roaring response from students of the Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School, with over 100 students attending the briefing in Lambak Kanan yesterday.

The outreach seminars, coordinated by Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), are targeted at secondary schools and colleges in Brunei to inspire them to create and develop innovative products for the local market through the Cipta competition.

ITB Director of International and Public Relations Dr Hj Supry Hj Ladi told The Brunei Times said that the seminars were also intended to promote the introduction of a third category to the competition, called "Young Inventors".

The category, which is open to students of Year 10 and above, will challenge and inspire students to prove their tech-savvy-skills.

Previously, the competition only had two categories: creating new products, processes or technologies and modifying existing products, processes or technologies.

The seminar consisted of two sessions; the first on the requirements, rules and regulations of the Cipta competition and the second on past winning Cipta products.

Dr Hj Supry said that the Cipta committee are working with Radio Televisyen Brunei's Rampai Pagi programme to create weekly segments of 10 to 15 minutes featuring past Cipta products.

He added that Brunei Economic Development Board's LEAP grant scheme was a great opportunity for inventors to further develop and market their products to the local market.

The biannual Cipta Awards offers a top prize of $10,000 as well as the Crown Prince Cipta Award trophy.

Participants are expected to create new products, processes or technologies, or modify existing ones as part of the drive to innovate for the country's economic future. The closing date for participation is October 16.
