HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is scheduled to be awarded with an honorary doctorate from one of the oldest universities in Asia, Universitas Indonesia on April 21.

This was said by the Indonesia Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Handriyo Kusumo Priyo, yesterday after he bid farewell to the two Indonesia Navy (TNI-AL) boats at the Brunei Naval Base in Muara.

"Universitas Indonesia is going to award His Majesty an honorary doctorate of philosophy in humanities and dialogue in civilisation," Handriyo told The Brunei Times.

Meanwhile, Universitas Indonesia's Chief of Staff Devie Rahmawati when contacted in Jakarta, explained that there were some considerations and thoughts that drive Universitas Indonesia to confer the honorary.

"His Majesty has succeeded in improving the well-being of the people through economic development, education and civilisation," Devie said.

It also refers to His Majesty's creativity in promoting dialogue of civilisations to promote Islam as a universal value that can be used as a bridge in the dialogue of civilisations and the involvement of the monarch in supporting political cooperation in the Asean region and the international arena that has contributed to development and the promotion of peace.

"His Majesty supports free education and healthcare access for all people and has managed to eradicate illiteracy among the people (in Brunei). His Majesty has also opened dialogue in education and promoted Malay culture," she added.

According to its website, Universitas Indonesia was founded in 1849 and represents the most experienced educational institution in Asia. Additionally, Christiaan Eijkman (the Director of Javanese Medical School-the earlier form of Universitas Indonesia) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1929. Universitas Indonesia has produced more than 400,000 alumni and continues its important role both nationally and internationally.
