Seminar highlights good aquaculture practice

THE Department of Fisheries held a fishing seminar and an exhibition at Dewan Pesiaran Kuala Belait to highlight the importance of quality control of seafood and good aquaculture practice.

Acting Director of the Fishery Department, Abd Halidi Hj Mohd Salleh in his remarks expressed hopes that "the seminar and exhibition will provide guidance for fishermen to reach good quality fishing products and to ensure their safety for the populations of Brunei."

The seminar was facilitated by three officers from the Fishery Department yesterday who delivered talks on various topics. One of the speakers was Hjh Norizan Hj Abd Karim who talked on the importance of implementing good aquaculture practice, while Hjh Hamidah Hj Ladis touched on the topic of "increasing quality of seafood with the right practice". The third talk was on "The role of the Bio Division Security regarding the safety of seafood" delivered by Cristalina Jalil Marsal.

A brief question and answer session were held after the talks, which saw an exchange of thoughts and knowledge between officials from the Fishery department and fishermen from around Kuala Belait and Seria.

The participants also had the opportunity to witness demonstrations on the use of sea navigation gadgets such as GPS (Global Positioning System) and the radio. Meanwhile the exhibition and galleries provided information about good fishing practice, current fishing projects, and sea navigation skills. The Fishery Department will be organising the same event in Temburong District on the November 19, and in Tutong District on November 26. The public is welcome to attend. The Brunei Times
