SEVERAL wooden stilt houses in Kg Baru, Seria have been affected by the recent flood causing great inconvenience to occupants in the area, forcing many residents to apply for temporary barrack housing.

During a visit by The Brunei Times yesterday, Lasa Anak Kan, 39, one of the occupants who has been living in the squatter area for about 25 years, said that it was uneasy to go to work and send his six-year-old son to school especially when the area is constantly affected by floodwaters.

The flood which was caused by heavy rain about a week ago resulted in waters up to two feet.

"My son has to cross the bridge before putting on clothes to prevent him from getting wet," said Lasa.

He visited the Penghulu of Mukim Seria last Monday as he wanted to report the situation. However, he added, he did not meet the Penghulu.

He said that this was the first time the area was flooded since 2002.

Lasa lives with his wife and two children aged six and one.

In 2009 he received two warning letters from the Brunei Shell Sdn Bhd as the illegal housing is located on its concession area.

"If given a temporary resident I would be more than happy to relocate," he said.

Last year he has applied for temporary barrack housing to relevant authorities. However, there has been no response as yet. Some of his neighbours have already been successfully relocated. —Sally Piri The Brunei Times
