Ex-cop found guilty of accepting $200 bribe

THE Magistrate's Court has convicted a former police personnel, S/Sgt Basri Marali, after he was found guilty for accepting bribe.

The defendant was first brought to court on July 2, 2010, facing one count of offence under Section 6(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act (Chapter 131).

Basri claimed trial for the charge of corruptly accepting $200 from a Chinese man. The gratification was as an inducement for not to take action on the Chinese man for removing the Toyota Echo vehicle from the scene of an accident before police completed their investigation. The presiding judge, Senior Magistrate Pg Hjh Masni Pg Hj Bahar will hand down the sentence on February 18.

The defendant is facing a fine of $30,000 and seven years in jail following the conviction. Syazwan Sadikin
