MoH promotes jobs in healthcare at fair

IN an effort to draw more locals towards fulfilling the nation's undermanned healthcare sector, the Ministry of Health (MoH) yesterday launched its biennial careers carnival at the Health Promotion Centre (HPC).

The much anticipated careers carnival was launched by the guest of honour Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohd Yusof, Minister of Health.

In his remarks, the minister said that the careers carnival bore great significance as it did not only promote careers in healthcare, but it also attracted more local students to venture into the much-needed fields of medicine and health.

The minister also added that the careers carnival intends to inform the public, particularly the students, about the qualifications required by MoH for further studies and professions in the sector corresponding to the ministry's strategic plan to strengthen and consolidate the nation's healthcare system.

It is further anticipated that the careers carnival will foster a better understanding concerning the role of sevices provided by healthcare professionals, which will hopefully lead to enhanced cooperation between healthcare professionals in the Sultanate and members of the wider public.

Among the highlights at yesterday's event was the minister's hand over of the "Careers in Healthcare 2012 Booklet" to representatives of school departments under the Ministry of Education, as well as the Ministry of Religious Affairs' Islamic Studies Department and the Tahfiz Al-Quran Institute.

Meanwhile, a careers exhibition will be held throughout the carnival, whereby some 30 healthcare professionals will be on hand to deliver information about their respective fields.

Visitors will also have to opportunity to partake in activities such as games and quizzes.

The careers fair will take place at the Health Promotion Centre for six days from February 7 to 12. Talks on the different professions within healthcare, such as medical doctor or dentist, will be held on a daily basis in Studio Room 1 and Studio Room 2.

The careers carnival is open from Tuesday until Thursday and Saturday from 8am to 12pm and 2pm to 4:30pm.

On Friday, the public can visit from 8am to 1pm and from 2:30pm to 5pm. On Sunday the fair will be open from 8am until 4:30pm.

Also present at the launching ceremony yesterday was the ministry's Permanent Secretary Dato Paduka Hj Abd Salam Abd Momin and other senior officers.

The previous careers carnival held in 2010 was well-received by the public.
