National worldskills contest commences

SKILLS competitions could further improve work quality and knowledge among instructors and workers, while at the same time encouraging cooperation among government agencies, technical and vocational and other educational institutions, said Acting Director of Department of Technical Education yesterday.

Speaking during the launching of the Sixth Worldskills Brunei Darussalam National Competition, Mohd Sharifuddin Hj Mohd Salleh, who is also Chairperson of the competition's Executive Committee said that the competition on national level would also help identify candidates to represent the country in the Ninth Worldskills ASEAN 2012 competition scheduled to take place in Jakarta, Indonesia in November this year.

"I hope that with the experience gained from competing at international level, instructors and students can bring this home and increase competitiveness among each other therefore boosting the image and quality of technical and vocational education in the country," he said.

The acting director was then shown the various displays and demonstrations.

There are 14 disciplines being competed by about 86 participants comprising students from Vocational and Technical Institutions, Institut Teknologi Brunei, Youth Development Centre and private sectors.

The competition is being held from February 7 to 9.

The competition venues are at the Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College (MTSSR), the Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering, Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School, the Sultan Bolkiah Vocational School and Mechanical Training Centre.
