SIX images symbolising Brunei Darussalam was depicted in a field performance themed "Negaraku, Brunei Darussalam" with more than 3,000 students performing a strong show as the Sultanate celebrated her 28 years of independence at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien in the capital yesterday.
The images: a clock; raihal (Quran stand); butterfly on the Bunga Simpur (national flower); Beras Laila ; fish; and map of Brunei, all stood to represent the identity the country is known for.
With a total of 60 field coaches tasked to train more than 3,000 students, hard work and cooperation were the core requirements to pull a successful show.
Speaking to The Brunei Times, a field coach said that the students had gone through a gruelling training schedule for one month to prepare for "Negaraku, Brunei Darussalam".
"Performing today for the National Day, I felt kind of nervous but I felt really proud when I see my students performing really well in the last rehearsal," beamed Johnson Chung Meng Jiunn, field coach for Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School (SMSUA).
When asked what was the hardest thing encountered during rehearsal, Johnson said that for the students to remember the steps to the performance and controlling their attitude in the initial stages were some of the challenges.
"(However) working together as a team and for us coaches to be supportive and friendly to the students helps," said Johnson.
On site, Johnson together with other coaches were seen energising the students with motivating shout-outs for the National Day to lift the spirits of the students to get in the mood for their show of patriotism.
Another field coach for Mentiri Secondary School who declined to be name, said that being the only coach for a large number of students performing for "Negaraku, Brunei Darussalam" was a daunting experience at first, yet, she never thought of giving up and did her best to coach the students.
"Because this is for the country, it is not for me (to give up)," said the field coach who noted it was hard work and cooperation with all parties that made the performance possible.
On the images, the field coach explained the clock symbolised the moments of the country, the raihal as an Islamic country, butterfly and Bunga Simpur to represent the country's flora and fauna, and fish as the source of the country's agriculture livelihood.
