FIVE schools from primary to higher education institution in four districts have been selected to be the model schools, in line with the priorities of the national education policy to create first-class schools at all levels.

In a launching ceremony officiated by Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong yesterday, the five model schools selected comprised three primary schools, a secondary school and a vocational school.

The schools are Sultan Hashim Batu Apoi Primary School in Temburong which has a total of 126 students and 14 teachers; Panaga Primary School in Belait, with 429 students and 29 teachers; and Perpindahan Kampong Bukit Beruang II Primary School in Tutong that has 140 students and 17 teachers.

The two schools in Brunei-Muara District are represented by Rimba II Secondary School which has 1,300 students and 114 teachers as well as Wasan Vocational School, with 358 students and 42 teachers.

In his welcoming remark, Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education Hj Mahrub Hj Murni said that the selection of these schools was in accordance with the level of school and district only, not based on their previous and current academic performances.

The cohort students for these model schools, he added, are those who are already studying there.

"To pioneer this challenging mission (model schools), the Ministry of Education has identified and selected several experienced school leaders in the field of school management and administration in accordance with their respective level of schooling," said Hj Mahrub.

He explained that the school leaders, comprising principals and headmasters, have conducted the School Leadership Programme and the programme of Purpose Energy Affirmation Knowledge Sustainability (PEAKs).

"It is hoped that what has been learned from these two programmes and the Continuous Professional Development Programme, will be useful to pave another historical event in the positive development of education in Brunei Darussalam."

The establishment of model schools is a mission and long-term investment of the government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to ensure that the majority of the nation's future generations are truly independent and capable of becoming excellent populous, based on the philosophy of Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB).

Also present during the event held at Rimba II Secondary School among others were Deputy Education Minister Dato Seri Setia Hj Yusoff Hj Ismail, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) Dr Hj Junaidi Hj Abdul Rahman, ministry's senior officials, Legislative Council members and grassroots leaders. The Brunei Times
