FOUR students from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College departed the Sultanate yesterday to participate in the Singapore International Mathematics Challenge (SIMC) which begins today.
The SIMC is a biennial international mathematics event that provides opportunities to fuel students' interest in mathematics and spur them to reach for greater heights, information on the competition's website read.
The students are accompanied by the college's Acting Principal (afternoon session) Zabaidah Tuah, and teacher-in-charge Kifiri Yap.
The participants Zabaidah Tuah, Nursyazana Syamimi Hj Zamain, Azimatul Fadzlina, Han Yi Chour and Md Najwan Masli are all in Lower Six or pre-university, according to the delegation's coordinator.
The SIMC in its website stated that for this year's challenge, students will need basic knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, calculus, probability theory and graph theory.
Participants will work as a team where they will be given two days to work on solving the equation before making an oral presentation to the judges, the information said.
Each team will have 15 minutes to present their solutions to the judges followed by a five-minute 'Question and Answer' session, it added.
The participants will vie for four awards namely the Challenge Champion, Distinction Award, Commendation Award and the Special Awards.
The event, held in Singapore, aims to bring together bright students from around the world to pit their skills in a rigorous competition where they will demonstrate their creativity and mathematical skills in a mathematical modelling challenge. Students will have the opportunity to interact in social and cultural activities.
SIMC also aims to provide a platform for professional exchange of good practices in Math education across different countries through the Educator Programme.
It also provides opportunities for mathematics educators to engage in professional discourse and establish and develop ties with counterparts from around the world.
The event, participated by at least 45 schools from more than 20 countries and regions, will end on May 25, 2012.
